Islamic Labour Code

Islamic Labour Code book and digital edition

Overview

A CLR publication grounding labour rights in Quranic and Sunnah teachings — a prototype legal instrument for the 57-member OIC bloc. Two full editions, English and Urdu, each carried from book layout through to a dedicated website, with flipbook reading added in 2025.

01

The Challenge

The Code had to read as a credible legal-academic reference for governments while staying approachable to religious and lay audiences. Every Quran and Hadith citation needed correct, respectful Arabic inside an English — and later fully right-to-left Urdu — layout, without either edition feeling like an afterthought.

02

Design & Identity

Each edition got its own cover and interior. Urdu body text runs in Mehr Nastaliq Web, rendering Nastaliq’s stacked letterforms properly, while scripture is set in KFGQPC Uthman Taha Naskh and HAFS Uthmanic — the Mushaf-grade typefaces used in official Quran printings. Scripture needed to look like scripture.

03

Technical Execution

Two separate WordPress/Elementor builds — English at the root and Urdu as a full RTL instance, not a bolted-on switcher. Readers get a chapter-linked flipbook and a lightweight text version with every chapter as its own page for accessibility and search. Live counters tally pages, chapters, Hadiths and verses.

04

The Outcome

A live, dual-language reference alongside CLR’s Labour Rights Index — still maintained and still growing. It speaks in the register its audience already trusts, backed by typography precise enough to carry that trust into the Arabic itself.
